Dark brown patina with earthen highlights. Good very fine.

From the Thomas Kirby Collection.

Antiochos IV's "Egyptianizing" series of bronzes coins includes four denominations, the largest sporting the head of Zeus on the obverse, the second largest with the head of Serapis, the third, as this, with the head of Isis, and the smallest depicting the radiate head of the king. All four denominations share the same reverse type and legend. An interesting feature of the issue is a small central cavity or dimple that is also found on contemporary Ptolemaic bronze denominations. Svoronos included these types in his monumental study of Ptolemaic coinage, Ta Nomismata tou Kratous ton Ptolemaion, but in his Seleucid Mint of Antioch, Newell reattributed them to Antioch on the Orontes based on plentiful hoard evidence. They seem to represent a celebratory issue commemorating Antiochos IV's campaigns in Ptolemaic Egypt.
