SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Antiochos IV Epiphanes, 175-164 BC. (Bronze, 18 mm, 4.45 g, 12 h), quasi-municipal issue, Tripolis, year 147 = 166-165. Jugate busts of Antiochos IV, radiate and diademed, and Laodike IV, veiled, to right; behind, monogram. Rev. ΤΡΙΠΟΛΙΤΩΝ The Dioskouroi on horseback prancing right. Cf. HGC 9, 696 (R2-3; with date). Cf. Rouvier 1627 (with date). Cf. SC 1441 (with date). Very rare issue with the jugate busts of Antiochos IV and his queen, Laodike, and unpublished lacking the Seleukid era date on the reverse. Black and tan patina. Very fine.

From the Thomas Kirby Collection, USA.

Tripolis was the only mint to produce a coinage portraying the jugate busts of Antiochos IV and his queen, Laodike IV. All have the date ZMP or IMP (SE 147 = 166/5 BC) below the horses on the reverse. The date seems to be missing entirely from the die here, however!
