SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Alexander I Balas, 152-145 BC. (Bronze, 12 mm, 1.36 g, 12 h), quasi-municipal issue, Laodikeia by the Sea. Diademed head of Alexander I to right. Rev. ΛΑΟΔΙΚΕΩΝ / ΤΩΝ ΠΡΟΣ ΘΑΛΑΣΣΗΙ Dolphin swimming to right. CSE 2, 461-2. HGC 9, 939 (R2-3). SC 1808. Very rare. Brown patina with green deposits. Very fine.

From the Thomas Kirby Collection, USA.

This interesting and quite rare bronze coin is the smallest denomination in a three-denomination bronze set struck under Alexander I at Laodikeia by the Sea. Unlike Alexander's quasi-municipal issues from other mints, those from Laodikeia are not dated.
