SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Antiochos VII Euergetes (Sidetes), 138-129 BC. (Bronze, 18 mm, 3.84 g, 12 h), Marisa. Diademed head of Antiochos VII to right. Rev. ΒAΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ Splayed double cornuacopiae. HGC 9, 1094. SC 2125. Very rare, and with an attractive green patina with earthen highlights. Very fine.
From the Thomas Kirby Collection, USA.
This interesting coin has just a scarce (S) designation in HGC, probably due to the eight examples found in the Marisa excavations and a few additional specimens seen in trade in Jerusalem. SNG Spaer assigned this type to Gaza, but with reservations. All provenanced examples seem to come from the far south of Coele-Syria.
