SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Antiochos VIII Epiphanes (Grypos), 121/0-97/6 BC. (Bronze, 18 mm, 5.96 g, 11 h), Antioch on the Orontes, year 202 = 111-110. Radiate and diademed head of Antiochos VIII to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ ΦΙΛΟΜΕΤΟΡΟΣ Eagle standing left, scepter under far wing; to left, monogram; below, BΣ and cornucopia. CSE -. Cf. HGC 9, 1212 (with ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ instead of ΦΙΛΟΜΕΤΟΡΟΣ). SC 2308. SNG Spaer -. Dark green patina. Very fine.

From the Thomas Kirby Collection, USA.

Struck during the final year that Antiochos VIII dated his eagle bronzes, this extremely rare variety sports the epithet ΦΙΛΟΜΕΤΟΡΟΣ (Philometor = "Mother-loving") instead of the usual ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ (Epiphanes = "God manifest"). It is not known why the change, but it should be noted the irony of it: Antiochos VIII had murdered his mother with poison!
