Antinoos, the youthful lover of the emperor Hadrian, was from the rural region of Mantineion close to the Bithynian polis of Claudiopolis. Very little is known about him. After his death, Hadrian had him deified and established his cult throughout the Empire. It is uncertain but very likely that his cult also existed in his hometown, thus his appearance here on a coin struck under Commodus.
