ITALY. Papal States. Urban IV (Jacques Pantaléon), 1261-1264. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 37 mm, 43.66 g, 12 h), Rome. S PA S PE Nimbate facing heads of St. Paul, bald and with a long, linear beard, on the left and St. Peter, with curly hair and beard composed of pellets, on the right; between them, Latin cross on a long staff and base; all within a circular, dotted border . Rev. VR/BANVS/ •PP• IIII• in three lines, the whole within simple round dotted border. Serafini 1-3. Old scratch on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

Jacques Pantaléon was appointed Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, in 1255 by Pope Alexander IV. In 1261 the year that he was elected Pope as Urbanus IIII, the Byzantines recaptured Constantinople, which was lost during the disgraceful fourth crusade. Urbanus never accepted the dissolution of the Latin empire of Constantinople and unsuccessfully tried to organise its recapture from the Byzantines.
