NETHERLANDS. Circa 1461-1600. Weight of 1 Ryal (Rose Noble) (Copper, 14 x 15 mm, 7.43 g). A king with sword and shield standing in a ship with a rose in the centre of the hull. Rev. Blank. Withers, BCW -, but cf. 195-224. Rare in this quality. Very fine.
The squared weight is for a Ryal (rose noble), used from the reigns of Edward IV to Elizabeth I. It was equivalent to 5 Shillings. This weight was possibly struck in the Low Countries, as many were. Ryals were only issued 1464-1470 although they circulated for longer; later weights tend to be square.
