NETHERLANDS, Uncertain region. Circa 16th century. Seal (Lead, 57 mm, 37.54 g), Merchant's Cloth Seal, dated 1583. GVILHELMVS ALMANDETE 1583 Frontal rose bloom in the style of the Tudor rose. Rev. Blank. Mordovin, Late Medieval and early Modern Cloth Seals in the Collection of the Hungarian National Museum, Archaeologiai Értesítő 139 (2014), 193-237, Number 88. Very fine.

From a collection in the USA.

This merchant's seal, probably used in the European cloth trade along the coasts of the North- and Baltic Seas, is somewhat of an enigma. The rose at its centre clearly is a reference to the Tudor Rose of England. However, the name of the merchant, inscribed around the central motive, sounds rather Germanic ('Wilhelm the German') and points to the Low Countries. This assumption is supported by the fact that the trade in cloth was channeled primarily through this region and merchants from its trading hubs were heavily engaged in the business.
