German States
Bavaria. Maximilian II Proof 2 Taler (3-1/2 Gulden) 1855 PR63 Cameo NGC, Munich mint, cf. KM837 (unlisted in Proof), Dav-601, AKS-146, Thun-91. To date the lone example of this date, and just the second of the type more broadly, yet recognized as undisputedly Proof by either of the major grading service, and with an added cameo designation to wit. Generously decorated with mint frost to the devices, the depth of the fields is intensified by their generally dark patination, which, when held at an angle, discloses turquoise color throughout the reverse. Hardly a type we can express the rarity of enough, we would note that the last Double Taler of any type we offered from Maximilian II's reign was in 2008, clearly pointing to how infrequently such pieces come to market.
