Brandenburg. Friedrich Wilhelm Taler 1679-CS MS66 NGC, Berlin mint, KM490, Dav-6208, Madai-3076, von Schulthess-Rechberg-5937, Reimmann-3217, Henckel Collection-947, Belli Collection-2395, cf. Wilmersdörffer-7521 (lead off-metal strike), Bahrfeldt-136, Marienburg-Unl., von Schrötter-207. Among the most coveted of all Talers within the whole of the Brandenburg-Prussian series, and certainly one of the most famed designs produced under the House of Hohenzollern. Long recognized as a great rarity at least since the time of Reimarus' and Texier's work from the 18th century, it is hardly an exaggeration to recognize this piece as an absolute paragon of the type, besting even the Paramount example we offered in March 2021--an MS65, and the sales result cited by the Standard Catalog of World Coins--as the single-finest graded, and seemingly even exceeding the specimen in the Berlin Münzkabinett (Object No. 18205890). Rendered with the utmost care and attention on a broad and glassy flan that excludes no detail, the strike leaves nothing to the imagination, a salty, pewter-hued silhouetting tone picking out the contours of the devices against otherwise slate fields, while a significant sapphire coloration fills the recesses of the ornate shield on the reverse. It is notable that while the type has been considered a cornerstone of such famous cabinets as Henckel, Belli, and Reimmann, it was ultimately missing from missing from the holdings of Wilmersdörffer (who only had a lead off-metal striking), and is not recorded by Bahrfeldt in the collection of the Marienburg.

Minted during the last decade of the reign of one of the most important figures in 17th-century Germany, Friedrich Wilhelm, the Elector of Brandenburg and Duke of Prussia, it is easy to see this coin as representative of the accomplishments of the man himself. Known to history as the "Great Elector," Friedrich drastically reformed the electorate and set the stage for his son and successor, Friedrich I, to later become King of Prussia. That entity would soon rank as a foremost power on the European continent, as well as the lead actor in achieving German unification during the second half of the 19th century.

Ex. Köhlmoos Collection (Münzen & Medaillen AG Basel Auction 91, March 2001, Lot 100)

From the collector: This rare, eye-appealing 65 is one of my favorites in my German collection. To get a sense of its value, a mediocre-looking 65 sold for $38,400 in 2021. From the Cape Coral Collection of German Coins, Part I
