Brandenburg-Ansbach. Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Taler 1727-V MS66 NGC, Schwabach mint, KM159, Dav-1977, Schön-16, Wilmersdörffer-954, Grüber Collection-4398. Minted during the regency of Christiane Charlotte. More accurately a medal than a standard coinage when preserved at this level of quality, likely at least in part due to what appears to be a multiple strike, most visible in the denticles. Such often results in either the obverse or reverse being mildly off-center, a feature which does not afflict the specimen here in the least. Christiane Charlotte's bust rises in sculpturesque proportions above the surrounding fields, which exist as ponds of watery plum color which reveal considerable undercurrents of sky-blue and champagne on the obverse when viewed under good light. Though they remain ungraded, it is in our opinion that this piece very likely exceeds either the Grüber or Brand examples, or the coin plated by Schön (Hess-Divo Auction 287, May 2001, Lot 35) in terms of technical quality, and indeed it ranks as the single finest yet certified. One of the absolute jewels of the sale, deserving of in-hand inspection.
