Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover. George III of England Taler 1801-C MS64 NGC, Hannover mint, KM414, Dav-660, Schön-368 (under Hannover), Thun-150, Welter-2804. Mintage: 126. An occasion which any collector of Hannoverian coinage will recognize as absolutely singular--the opportunity to own a practically Gem Mint State specimen of this supremely rare "Cassengeld" Taler. Representing the last large silver issue of the principality prior to its occupation by Prussia, this coin must have been among the first to come off the dies, its full Prooflike and mirror-quality characteristics on display for all to see even from an arm's length. The wide expanses of the open fields, when paired with the overall execution of the strike, create a sense that George's bust is projecting towards the viewer in sculpturesque relief, in pleasant contrast to the its worn and understated status on so many examples. Merely for the sake of comparison, we can state that the only other we've presented, an XF45, hammered for $2280 in May of last year. The sole finest certified, and, for the connoisseur, a must.
