German States
Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Julius "Light" Taler 1574-(hh) MS63 NGC, Goslar mint, KM-MB138, Dav-9060, Knyphausen-Unl., Welter-576. Splendid, and a type emblematic of the vibrant artistry that characterized the 16th and 17th-century issues of the Duchy, with an overall care of preservation that simply cannot be taken as at all normal for the period. Flashy--particularly on the reverse--beneath fully original patina, the margins have taken on a charming cabinet iridescence that nicely frames gunmetal centers. Notably a type-date missing from the Preussag Collection.

It is thought that the candle from which the type derives its name ("Lichttaler") was meant to search as a visual metaphor for the obverse legend: Aliis inserviendo consumer ("In the service of others, I consume myself")--Julius' personal motto. Such was fitting for the Duke who regarded the role his position as being in service to his realm.
