Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. August II "Bell" Taler 1643 MS64 NGC, Zellerfeld mint, KM429, Dav-6375C, Knyphausen-462, Welter-816. Variety with AO instead of ANO to left of bell. An entrancing emission from a series of seven "Bell" talers (Glockenthaler) minted under August the Younger to commemorate the lifting of the siege of Wolfenbüttel in 1643. Long a bastion of Imperial forces since 1626, by the mid-1630's, the population of Wolfenbüttel had dwindled to just 160 inhabitants and a garrison of 7,000, when the Swedish Field Marshal Johan Banér laid siege of the town in 1641. August the Younger ultimately surrendered control of Hildesheim in return for peace in 1642. Depicting a bell of peace inscribed with the abbreviated Latin Nuncius Pacis Ex Sono Eius ("Tidings of Peace from Its Sound") over a view of the city, this piece absolutely brims with a quality almost never seen for the type or series at large, this accented by a vibrant iridescence that certainly suggests an added "plus" may be left wanting. Presently the sole finest at NGC across all varieties, and one of a mere 4 examples in soundly Mint State certification. From the Cape Coral Collection of German Coins, Part I
