German States
Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Ludwig Rudolf "Death of August Wilhelm" Taler 1731-IHT MS65 NGC, Brunswick mint, KM816, Dav-2132, Schön-169, Knyphausen-1095, Welter-2378. An incredibly elusive single-year commemorative, not least in this Gem Mint State quality. Almost certainly finer than the Köhlmoos example and apparently absent from Brand, the present specimen shows a slightly more dramatic die shift to the obverse than what is sometimes seen for the type, most visible in the legends though also discernable along the late Duke's face. Such may be diagnostic of the great pressure applied by the dies in executing such a fine specimen, each and every feature carefully cut with not the least evidence of weakness. Close inspection reveals only the most trivial stray wisps before the bust likely bounding the grade, though these are rapidly offset by the fine die polish which resides in the recesses areas of the design. Ideal for all intents and purposes, and a cabinet piece through-and-through.
