Donauwörth. Free City Taler 1543 MS64 NGC, Dav-9170, Schulten-756. With the name and titles of Karl V. The first year of issue for this exceedingly fleeting type, where the free city of Donauwörth was bestowed mint rights by Karl V for only a decade, with the present representative remaining as one of the finest products of that decree. While the majority of extant examples seen at auction in recent decades endure in lesser tiers of preservation, the piece at hand clearly deviates from this trend. A fully array of vibrant tones pervade the fields, rich in violet, apricot, and cerulean, and despite typical planchet imperfections and striking weakness common to even high-grade specimens, little can detract from the stark impression of pristine originality.
