German States
Fugger-Babenhausen. Maximilian II von Wellenburg Taler 1621 MS64 NGC, Babenhausen mint, KM17, Dav-6673, Kull-98a. With the name and titles of Ferdinand II. An absolutely gorgeous rendition from this famous line of money-lenders, featuring what can only be considered gem-level visual quality not just for the 17th-century, but for Taler-types in general. Perhaps kept from a numerically finer designation by just a hint of cabinet friction over the highest points of the design, surely a result of their pronounced reliefs, every inch of the surfaces appears highly lustrous and stippled, with the exceedingly minor camber to the flan allowing incoming light to wash over the fields. Presently tied with the ex. Millennia/Goodman/Brand example in this peak certification as the only two yet graded, with that specimen hammering for roughly $3700 when it reappeared at auction last October.

Ex. Johann Max Böttcher Collection (Harald Möller Auction 47, November 2007, Lot 383) From the Cape Coral Collection of German Coins, Part I
