Hall. Free City Taler 1746-CGL MS63 NGC, Nürnberg mint, KM32, Dav-2279, Schön-17, Erlanger-2159, Raff-49. Mintage: 800. With the name and titles of Franz I. A coin whose considerable mint gloss situates it at a visual level above many numerically finer specimens, igniting a cascade of apricot, cerulean, and magenta coloration, especially on the reverse. Bested by exceedingly few in NGC's census--the Millennia example an MS65, and the D. Moore specimen an MS65★--it is fair to say, even with its contained surface chatter, that this piece could very nearly be meriting an added "star" designation in its own right. Worth seeing in hand for all those who have the opportunity, and a fitting testament to Werner's skill as an engraver.
