Hamburg. Free City Taler 1735-IHL MS64 PCGS, Hamburg mint, KM386, Dav-2283, Schön-35 (this coin), Gaed-525. Mintage: 8,000. With the name and titles of Karl VI. Hands down one of the most gorgeous Hamburg Talers that we have ever had pass through our hands, it hardly seems adequate to call this piece a visual delight. Already on the upper end of the certified population, with none yet finer, it is in the combination of the coin's luster and toning that it quite literally earns its colors, the most brilliant turquoise along the legends fading into lapis lazuli, pink, and violet in the open fields, all while remaining highly glassy. Easily a specimen one could envision with an added star or plus, representing one of the musts for anyone intended to view this exquisite collection in hand. We would note that while the Standard Catalog records the mintage for the type as 8,000 pieces, Schön suggests that only 7,570 were struck.
