Hamburg. Free City Taler (48 Schilling) 1761-OHK MS65 NGC, Hamburg mint, KM417.1, Dav-2285, Schön-53, Gaed-527. With the name and titles of Franz I. Utterly captivating to say the least, and a coin of such a distinguished aesthetic caliber that it can hardly be compared to the lion's share of its peers. A soft argent over a bright aura of sunset color, one can hardly view the present piece without feeling that it is practically unimprovable. Given that Davenport indicates that just two dies were used for minting the 1761 48 Schilling, the current offering almost certainly represents one of the earliest emissions from those dies, set aside soon after minting and long carefully cared for.
