Hesse-Cassel. Wilhelm V "Willow Tree" Taler 1636-LH MS64 NGC, Cassel mint, KM162.1, Dav-6755, Fiorino Collection-629, Hoffmeister-1044 var. Variety with 5 buildings (2 to left, 3 to right) and no rain droplets. The penultimate date for the type from Wilhelm V's reign, produced just a year prior to his death. Generally immaculate for the standards of a 17th-century Taler, among the few imperfections we can find are several small abrasions by the rightmost house, which, if anything, keep the offering just shy of full gem status. Nonetheless, the preservation exemplified here is by all means peak for the series, a fact verified not only by its status as the finest of just two Mint State-graded representatives yet certified, but by the superior quality of the planchet, which lacks annealing imperfections or prominent edge cracks. A lustrous finish and full iridescence over a dolphin-gray flan further completes the picture of a treasure long stored in an old coin cabinet, likely making this one of the few public appearances it has ever seen.
