Hildesheim. Sede Vacante Taler 1688-HB MS64 NGC, Clausthal mint, KM56, Dav-5407, Knyphausen-4552, Wilmersdörffer-10242, Cappe-250. Mintage: 800. With the name and titles of Leopold I. An intriguing and captivating historical issue, produced during a time period of unrest in Hildesheim, following the death of Max Heinrich von Brabeck and the election of Jobst Edmund von Brabeck as Prince-Archbishop on July 19, 1688, who was forced to flee the city during preparations for his consecration. Perhaps among the most beautiful emissions minted for the city, and certainly one of the most elegant depictions of Leopold I, the offering strikes the viewer more as a coin than a medal, its Specimen-like, glassy fields creating a light-dark contrast again the devices, which, on the reverse in particular where deeper sapphire and turquoise coloration dominates, lends a frosty finish to the devices. Indeed, when viewed head-on, the reverse arms present a practically cameo effect, strongly suggesting that this was one of the first pieces struck from the new dies. Not a piece that one should expect to see surpassed anytime soon, and most likely the very finest quality one could hope to achieve for the issue.
