Hohenlohe-Kirchberg. Karl August Taler 1738-WN MS66 NGC, Nürnberg mint, KM6, Dav-2358, Schön-2, Albrecht-210. We are generally quite careful about making claims in absolute terms on a coin's quality with a series where generally few examples have been certified, and yet, when we find ourselves examining the current offering, we can hardly hesitate in calling it likely the finest available to commerce. Just a one-year type that has seen a mere 4 examples enter into the graded population, to call this coin either fabulous or unfathomable simply does not do it justice. Every inch of the surfaces is dressed in an unmistakably glassy sheen that is clear even when exposed to mild indirect light, this overlaying a predominantly gunmetal hue with strong notes of underlying peach and traces of icy pull-away tones at the lettering. Medallic relief characterizes the raised features, giving a presentation-worthy status to the offering on the whole. By all appearances, this coin seems far finer than the Köhlmoos example, with apparently none among the holdings of Brand, Goodman, or Erlanger. Unquestionably one of the jewels of this collection.
