Lippe-Detmold. Paul Friedrich Emil Leopold III Proof Taler 1866-A PR65+ Cameo NGC, Berlin mint, cf. KM267 (unlisted in Proof), Dav-725, AKS-16, Thun-213. A very special piece not just for its gem "plus" level preservation, but also as the only Proof-certified coin of Lippe-Detmold at either service, an immense moniker for a 19th-century Taler. Generally flawless throughout, viewing the specimen here in hand gives the observer the sense that this can only be a very special striking produced for a special occasion, and is certainly not a result of fresh dies alone. Lightly patinated from longtime careful storage, we can but grasp at the excitement this piece will encourage as it crosses the auction block.
From the collector: I was surprised when I purchased this coin in 2006 because it was not marked as a proof, when it definitely was. From the Cape Coral Collection of German Coins, Part I
