PTOLEMAIC EGYPT. Ptolemy VI Philometer (180-145 BC). AR stater or tetradrachm (29mm, 13.96 gm, 12h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 4/5. Uncertain mint in Cyprus (Arsinoe?), dated uncertain era Year 91 (172/1 BC). Diademed head of Ptolemy I right, aegis tied around neck; dotted border / ΠTOΛEMAIOY-ΣΩTHPOΣ, eagle with closed wings standing left on thunderbolt; AP monogram (date qA in ligature) in left field. Svoronos 1207 (Ptolemy IV and V, Marathus mint). DCA 73. C. Lorber, The Ptolemaic era coinage revisited, Numismatic Chronicle 167 (2007), pp. 105-17. Both sides expertly struck from magnificent dies with an exceptionally attractive portrait style. Lightly toned lustrous surfaces with areas of golden highlights.
