Great Britain
Kings of All England. Edward the Martyr Penny ND (975-978) AU58 NGC, Lincoln mint, Hafgrimr as moneyer, S-1142, N-763 (R), SCBI II (Hunterian)-745, SCBI XXVII (Lincolnshire)-Unl., SCBI XXX (American)-398 (this coin), Mossop-Plate I, 27 (same obverse die?). 1.54gm. +EΛDǷEΛ RE+ ΛNGLOX (end of legend ligatured and abbreviated), diademed, draped bust of Edward left / +HΛFGRIM N-O LINCOL (NC ligate), small cross pattée. One of the most challenging issues from the late Anglo-Saxon series to locate in any sort of meaningful condition, the relatively small number of coins which do survive from Edward's short reign normally coming in abysmal preservation with numerous issues. For comparison, the Millennia example, considered to be the finest known, ranks only mildly finer at MS62. Admittedly having experienced some light friction over the designs at some point in its life, the offering has not suffered from the least loss of detail, its flan full, unchipped, and unbent, with clear die polish in the reverse field. One of the nicest available from this war-torn period in English history.

Ex. CNG Triton VII (January 2004, Lot 1251); Garrett Collection, Part II (Bank Leu-Numismatic Fine Arts October 1984, Lot 756); Privately purchased from Wayte Raymond on October 11, 1922; A. Mann Collection (not in Sotheby's 1917 sale catalog of his collection) From the Historical Scholar Collection
