MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AV stater (18mm, 8.59 gm, 1h). NGC MS 4/5 - 4/5. Lifetime issue of Memphis, ca. 332-323 BC. Head of Athena right, hair in four tight corkscrew curls, another at temple, and two over left shoulder, wearing pendant earring, beaded necklace, and triple-crested Corinthian helmet pushed back on head, short parallel crest ends, bowl decorated with coiled serpent right / AΛEΞANΔPOY, Nike standing facing, head left, wreath in outstretched right hand, stylis cradled in left arm; EY in outer left field, rose below wing in right field. Price 3966 var. (no serpent on helmet, EY below wing). Struck from fresh, high-relief dies of superb style on lustrous, satiny flan. Extremely rare - only three examples in sales archives, this coin inclusive.
