Rio de la Plata gold 8 Escudos 1829 RA-P AU58 PCGS, La Rioja mint, KM21, Fr-2, Chaves-754, Onza-1562 (few specimens known), Janson-14. Highly engaging and visually balanced for a coveted type almost exclusively encountered in lesser designations, made even more impressive by the complete lack of extant examples bearing this date. The trademark sun-face obverse design for which the type is instantly recognizable exhibits full articulation of its features, with particular strengths to the rays which often times are the first to experience evidence of circulation. Pale-gold appearances tinged with saffron silhouettes abound this near-Mint State survivor, while careful scrutiny reveals only trivial signs of handling and the minor flan flaw to the central devices, capping the assigned grade. By far the rarest of these 8 Escudos, of which less than five are currently known, this being the only certified representative between both grading services. Struck with the same dies as Janson-14, but seemingly finer than the plate coin, with a more complete circle of pearls and less highpoint rub. For the specialist of the Argentinian series, this opportunity is a must, with an example of this date reaching the market once every decade or so and always to great fanfare.
