Salzburg. Paris von Lodron gold 10 Ducat 1628 AU53 NGC, KM132, Fr-729, Probszt-1045, Zöttl-1249. 34.54gm. Struck upon the dedication of the Salzburg Cathedral by Archbishop Paris von Lodron on 25 September 1628. A design we usually encounter with much greater frequency on silver issues or smaller gold denominations from Paris von Lodron's substantial 30+ year appointment. Here we have one of his most expansive issues, in 10 Ducat weight and boasting deeply embossed details that render this complex design fully upon the massive gold flan beneath. While a gentle dispersal of grade-limiting friction precludes the piece from a most coveted Mint State designation, the piece remains highly collectible. Traces of originality and ambered patination decorate the legends, serving as a subtle distraction from a small split developing to the outer edge. Regardless, this seldom-seen gold issue is one of only a small handful currently occupying certified populations, and deserving of a bid commensurate with that fact.
