Flanders. Philip the Bold (1384-1404) gold Ange d'Or (Gouden Engel) ND (from 1387) MS64★ NGC, Ghent mint, Fr-167, Delm-472 (R3), Schneider-151, Vanhoudt/Saunders-276 (R2). 5.08gm. Introduced under an ordnance dated April 3, 1387. +PhILIPPVS: DЄI: GRΛ: DVX: BURG'• Z (retrograde): COm' • FLΛnD' (saltire and double saltire stops), Angel standing facing between the shields of Burgundy (on left) and Flanders (on right) / +BЄnЄDICTVS • QVI • VЄnIT • In • nOmInЄ • DOmInI (lozenge stops), ornate cross with lions rampant in angles, all within quatrefoil with trefoils in spandrels. Exquisite quality for this High Medieval Flemish emission, which closely imitates the Ange d'Or introduced by Philippe VI of France in 1340. Heavily laden with Gothic artistry throughout, even inch of the specimen at hand fully attests to the skill of the die engraver--his guide still visible around portions of the reverse cross--with each letter and feature cut with precision and carefully struck-up to leave almost no areas underexpressed. Despite Vanhoudt and Saunders' rarity rating suggesting that specimens become available every 2-3 years, we have been able to locate just 5 others crossing the auction block in the last 2 decades, with 9 total yet certified between NGC and PCGS combined. Undoubtedly worthy of its "star" designation, and deserving of a premium bid as such.
