João V gold 20000 Reis (Dobrão) 1727-M MS64 NGC, Minas Gerais mint, KM117, LMB-251. Struck in the Minas Gerais province of Vila Rica, where the Portuguese extracted most of the Brazilian gold, this short-lived issue departed from the duodecimal system that included 12,800 Réis coin as its largest denomination, becoming the largest gold coin ever struck in Brazil. At the peak of its population, this near-gem representative displays a mesmerizing Prooflike effect across the lustrous surfaces. A commendable quality can be seen when analyzing the precise strike, lacking the usual center-weaknesses seen in the issue, and abounding in cartwheel luster, something that is usually lacking even in Mint State graded Dobroes. Decidedly scarce, certainly as a type, yet more so in this esteemed grade, and deserving of close collector interest as well as a premium bid.
