Danish West Indies
Danish Colony. Christian IX gold 10 Daler (50 Francs) 1904 (h)-GJ MS64 Prooflike PCGS, Copenhagen mint, KM73, Fr-2, Sieg-32. Mintage: 2,005. Exceptionally medallic for this largest denomination issue produced during Danish rule of the islands of Saint Thomas, Saint John, Saint Croix, and Water Island. The Danish government would eventually sell these islands to the United States in 1917, partly due to fears of a takeover by Germany during the First World War. Wholly worthy of its advanced "Prooflike" designation as evidenced by the boldly struck devices laden with boisterous mint frost and projected towards the viewer even when seen at a distance. While two examples of the type certify technically finer, the addition of this PL designation makes this both a conditional and aesthetic outlier, besting even our Paramount example in MS63.
