Aquitaine. Edward III (1325-1377) gold Leopard d'Or ND (from 1357) MS64 NGC, Bordeaux mint, Fr-4, S-8039, Dup-1051B, Elias-39a var. (with saltire rather than mullet in spandrel behind tail), W&F-44 6/b var. (R; same). 3.86gm. Third Emission (from July 1357). +ЄDWARDVS: DЄI: GRA: RЄGIS: AHGLIЄ: FRAИCIЄ: RЄX (Lombardic A's, double rosette or voided quatrefoil stops), crowned leopard passant left, raising right forepaw, within tressure of 10 arches, saltire in spandrel behind tail, rosettes or voided quatrefoils in remaining / +XP(crescent)C: VInCIT: XP(crescent)C: RЄGnAT: XP(crescent)C: IMPЄRAT (double rosette or voided quatrefoil stops), floriate cross within quatrefoil, leopards passant in angles. An intriguing subtype for the issue which appears to be largely undocumented in the standard scholarship--whereas Edward III's Third Issue Leopards d'Or are generally recorded to be distinguished by a mullet in the spandrel directly behind the leopard's tail, this specimen clearly displays a saltire. Although such is characteristic of the Second Issue, as pointed out by Duplessy, Third issue specimens are further distinguished by their larger crowns, the bands of which extend to the tips of the leopard's ears, perhaps suggesting a transitional style of engraving between the two emissions. Already rather lofty certified status for the type in general, propelling the offering far above its standard rarity vis-a-vis the Leopards d'Or of Edward the Black Prince.
