Prussia. Friedrich Wilhelm IV gold Proof "State Prize" Medal of 20 Ducats ND (1850) PR62+ Ultra Cameo NGC, cf. Marienburg-4173 (there in bronze), Sommer-P105. 42mm. 69.61gm. By J.L. Jachtmann and C. Pfeuffer. A substantial gold Medal produced as a state award for artists and struck in impressive relief. Fully rendered in the Neoclassical style, the obverse depicts vignettes with figures engaged in artistic pursuits of painting, sculpting, music, and architecture; all centering a particularly fine recessed bust of Friedrich Wilhelm IV. The reverse exhibits a meticulous depiction of a quadriga headed by Apollo atop the old Berlin Museum, projecting boldly towards the viewer with griffins beneath. Wonderful and exceedingly reflective, bound to the assigned grade by only a minimal amount of contact marks typical of issues with such high relief, and certain to entertain advanced collectors of German Medals of this vintage. Accompanied by a letter to the Smithsonian inquiring about the piece, a 19th century green-leather box, and a modern felt box.
