Richard II gold Noble ND (1377-1399) MS62 NGC, Tower mint, Cross Patteé mm, Type 1b, S-1654, N-1302, Schneider-Unl. 7.74gm. RIC | ΛRD: D: G: RЄX: ΛnGL' • Z (retrograde) • FRΛnC: D: hIB' • Z (retrograde) • ΛQ' (saltire and double saltire stops), crowned, armored figure of Richard standing facing in ship, sword in right hand, shield in left / +IhC: ΛVTЄm: TRΛnSIЄnS: PЄR: mЄDIVm: ILLORVm: IBΛT (double saltire stops), R at center of large floriate cross with crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with trefoils in spandrels. Very appreciable certification for a type not often found in Mint State, an especially notable feat given the matte texture and micro-fine stippling to its surfaces, which may suggest some time spent in saltwater. Clearly the work of a very careful die engraver, it is noteworthy that the reverse legend has been rendered practically without abbreviations (except for in Christ's name).
