Richard III gold Angel ND (1483-1485) MS62 NGC, Tower mint, Halved Sun and Rose (SR2) mm, S-2152, N-1676 (R), Schneider-497 var. (punctuation). 5.06gm. (halved sun and rose) RICΛRD': DI': GRΛ: RЄX ΛnGL' • Z (retrograde) FRΛnC • (saltire and double saltire stops), nimbate figure of St. Michael the Archangel with one foot on the dragon (Satan), spearing with cross-tipped staff / (halved sun and rose) PЄR | CRVCЄ • TVΛ • SΛLVΛ • nOS XPC' • RЄDЄmPT (saltire stops), cross-topped royal shield over ship, R-(rose) to either side above. One of the most desirable English gold Angels from an already challenging king, with Mint State survivors appearing few and far between. Struck from notoriously crude and worn dies, close inspection nonetheless suggests minimal evidence of notable friction, with some minor earthen deposits in the legends. To date, the highest graded example of this subtype we have offered.
