Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold Pound ND (1595-1598) MS66★ NGC, Tower mint, Key over Woolpack mm, Sixth issue, S-2534, N-2008, Schneider-800. 11.22gm. (key over woolpack) ELIZABETH • D' • G' • ANG' • FRA' • ET • HIB' • REGINA •, crowned and ruffled half-length bust of Elizabeth left / (key over woolpack) SCVTVM • FIDEI • PROTEGET • EAM •, crowned Tudor shield flanked by E-R. A fantastic rarity of not only Elizabethan coinage, but of all British numismatics, struck in the later years of the famed queen's reign and ranking leagues beyond many of even the finest survivors of her monarchy. It is difficult to overstate the importance and desirability of the offering at hand, an absolute rarity seen in what is largely considered an unobtainable gem designation. Among the most original examples of this vintage, fielding an utterly complete rendering of Elizabeth in ornate dress and crown enveloped in a uniform canary patina that concentrates to a saturated tangerine and amber towards the outer registers. The reverse, while suffering from striking weakness to the legends which does nothing to impede their legibility, is in equally as impressive a conditional state as the obverse, both bereft of any instances of handling that could be considered distracting by even the most seasoned and conditionally discriminating collector. Unequivocally the finest of all certified and likely uncertified representatives across all mintmarks for the type, and a clearly distinguished offering among all pre-17th century hammered gold issues of England, bested by only five examples across thousands of submitted pieces. We would note that the Newman specimen only ranked a mere MS62 while the most recent gold Pound we offered was only an MS61, which realized $78,000, all-in, when it sold in May of this year. Given these observations, this offering demands to be recognized as special and only worthy of the highest-end collector of British gold.
