James I gold Rose Ryal ND (1605-1606) MS61 NGC, Tower mint, Rose mm, Second coinage, KM42, S-2613, N-2079 (R), Schneider-6. 13.69gm. • (rose) • IACOBVS • D' • G' • MAG' • BRIT' • | FRAN' • ET • HIBER' • REX •, James seated facing on Gothic throne, within tressure, lis-tipped scepter in right hand, globus in left, portcullis at feet / • (rose) • A • DNO' • FACTVM • EST • ISTVD • ET • EST • MIRAB' • IN • OCVLIS • NRIS, royal shield over Tudor rose. The last of England's famed Ryal coinage, and what a sight to see to say the least. On the one hand, the piece stands as the first Rose Ryal issue produced during James's reign, marking it as far scarcer than the majority of type representatives that become available, even before taking into consideration its stellar Mint State grade. Of the more significant hammered issues from this era, boasting an impressive breadth that fully lends to a most regal portrait of James filling the expanses while the reverse rose motif shimmers in golden resplendence. Nary a hint of weakness is seen throughout this ornately-designed offering, decorated in generous originality amidst lightly toned peripheries. Of the currently certified examples, the piece at hand ranks among the finest, and bested by just three pieces by one- and two-points.
