Great Britain
James I gold 1/2 Laurel ND (1623-1624) MS62 PCGS, Tower mint, Lis mm, Third coinage, KM70, S-2641A, Schneider-91. 4.53gm. A type whose rise to prominence in the last few years has been well-documented within our sales, generally garnering more and more interest with every subsequent auction appearance. Here we present a shimmering near-choice survivor almost exclusively witnessed by us in AU back to 2008. Fully shimmering in golden delight, a generous mint bloom traverses atypically strong devices produced with such clarity and sharpness rarely encountered for the type. While two strong vertical lines cut through the obverse fields, these appear more akin to die clash, and pleasantly framed James's crisp bust. Tied for the finest with just a single other, the Cheshire example we handled a decade ago, and as such is expected to generate ample bidder enthusiasm.
