William & Mary gold 5 Guineas 1692 UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, KM479.1, S-3422, Schneider-Unl. QVARTO edge. An ever-imposing issue we seldom get to handle with any regularity from the joint reign of William and Mary, only a few years after the "Glorious Revolution," which saw James II deposed from the throne of England. Notably absent is the characteristic elephant and castle hallmark, yet still as important an issue for collectors of this elusive series. Though evidence of an earlier cleaning is easily discernible from a prominent sheen across the surfaces, the engraved details remain full and largely unhandled, both portraits displaying laudable boldness with not a hint of weakness throughout. Dressed in a warm aurous patina likely having developed through placement in an advanced cabinet, where it most certainly will be headed at the conclusion of bidding.
