William III gold "Fine Work" 5 Guineas 1701 MS63 NGC, KM508, S-3456, Schneider-481, EGC-399 (R). DECIMO TERTIO edge. Plain Scepters variety. Hands down one of the most attractively-styled portraits we've handled this past year, most certainly deserving of its "Fine Work" moniker, especially when witnessed in this fully appreciable Choice Mint State designation. Few can claim to match the level of aesthetic quality seen here, with impressive level of detail bestowed to William's coifed hair and reverse arms, propelled towards the viewer by a complete strike leaving nary a weakness anywhere. High-relief in its appearances and practically medallic, besting the majority of certified examples, both conditionally and visually, including our Paramount example offered in 2021 as an MS61+, while remaining a single point behind the indominable Douglas Bentley specimen. Only the scattered presence of mostly trivial wisps preclude the piece at hand from greater designations, yet will do little to temper the interest of British collectors of this high-end series.
