George IV gold Proof 2 Pounds 1823 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS, KM690, S-3798, W&R-218 (R3), Marsh-T7 (R5). J.B.M. below truncation variety. A virtually immaculate survivor of this commendable single-year type, and the first Proof striking in the 2 Pound denomination. Rarely do we have the opportunity to witness a Merlen and Pistrucci design so fine, both conditionally and aesthetically. Practically medallic, the sensitively and fully defined engraved details risings in clear contrast against still, pondlike mirrors beneath, lending to the "Deep Cameo" designation bestowed by PCGS. Tilted at any angle, the paucity of distracting marks within the low-lying fields is appreciated, while gentle amber silhouettes further punctuate the raised devices. The finest among the handful of currently certified representatives, and likely among the most visual appealing representations of George IV portraiture in this intermediate state imbued upon a coin which is likely to stay that way for years to come.
