Victoria gold Mint Error - Struck 50% Off-Center Sovereign 1863 MS66 NGC, KM736.2, S-3853, Marsh-48. Likely variety with die number. Thoroughly substantial in terms of its visual effect upon all who view it, and easily recognized from afar, this considerable mint error would be impressive on its own, yet to witness two similar pieces of the same date and preservation is simply astounding. Likely the result of a mint worker's curiosity or bad day, the current offering presents a rare opportunity to inspect the appearances of a mid-19th century planchet beside a finished product. Of what is struck remains magnificent, the velveteen fields radiating aurous luster across Victoria's partial Young Head portrait. While the die number is struck wholly off-planchet, we can confirm the use of the same dies as the previous example by the presences of the same granularity and porousness to Victoria's neck. Regardless, rarely does one get the chance to see let alone bid on such imposing error specimens, both of which are incredibly worthy of elevated interest.
