Victoria gold Proof Pattern 2 Pounds 1887 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM768, S-3865, W&R-291 (R5), Marsh-T28 (R5). No B.P. initials to reverse. A thoroughly curious and enigmatic Pattern Proof striking of this instantly recognizable "Jubilee" issue, featuring both an obverse and reverse akin to what is witnessed on both circulation and Proof issues, yet lacking Benedetto Pistrucci's trademark "B.P." initials. Specialist David Iverson posits this creation the product of the surviving master tools of Pistrucci's original 1820 and 1823 2 Pounds issues, yet slightly modified only in size. These were then submitted for approval to the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Queen prior to production of the new Jubilee issues. The present offering retains both immense visual and conditional appeal, produced to exact calculation resulting in near-medallic features that project boldly towards the viewer. An abundance of die polish and deep mirrors result in a fully deserving "Ultra Cameo" superlative which propels this piece to an altogether elite tier. Hardly a mark of consequence is discernible even under magnification, contributing to the appreciable conditional state witnessed here. Aesthetics, preservation, and absolute rarity coalesce into our current offering, which simply remains a coin which must be viewed in-hand to be fully appreciated. Accompanied by a Sovereign Rarities booklet detailing the history of the 1887 2 Pounds issue.
