Vittorio Emanuele III 5 Lire 1901-R MS63 NGC, Rome mint, KM34, Pag-706 (R4), MIR-1134a (R4), Gig-70 (R4). Mintage: 114. The first instance we've had the pleasure to offer our bidders this key, not only among Vittorio Emanuele III's coinage, but of the greater Italian series. With this miniscule mintage, some consider the issue more of a trial prior to greater output, yet limited to this first striking by the Latin Monetary Union, a multi-national coalition attempting to reform European monetary systems and impose a bi-metallic standard. Unfortunately, these 5 Lire issues fell victim to disapproval from the group, becoming one of the scarcest European issues of this vintage and quickly winning favor with specialized collectors. This particular offering displays most appreciable visual characteristics coupled with a superior level of preservation, the peach-tinged steely expanses punctuated by an obverse crescent of iridescence. Despite a gentle dispersal of handling wisps precluding this survivor from even finer designations the piece at hand remains an outlier of this seldom-seen first-year of issue, bested conditionally by a mere four examples and deserving of a bid commensurate with this fact.
