British Colony. George III gold Specimen "Mauritius Campaign" Medal AH 1226 (1810) UNC Details (Mount Removed) PCGS, Calcutta mint, Tancred, Historical record of medals and honorary distinctions conferred on the British Navy, Army, and auxiliary forces, pg. 241 (erroneously recorded with the Hijra date 1223), Winter, "Gold and silver medals of the honorable East India Company" (British Numismatic Journal Vol. 17, 1923-1924), pp. 281-287. 51mm. 71.38gm. An imposing and extremely historically significant gold award, standing as the first service medal produced by the East India Company. One of only 45 examples in gold presented to the troops of Bengal after the surrender of Port St. Louis to the British Army on the Isle of France on December 3, 1810. The campaign itself was reportedly launched due to the fear of the Madras government that its commercial interests had been endangered by the French occupation of the Isle of Rodrigues, Bourbon, and France. Accompanied by its original suspension, this specimen shows an abundance of Prooflike reflectivity in the fields, which for their part show a microgranular texture. Though no indication is given that these pieces were minted from rusty dies, Winter does indicate that, as of the 1920's, the dies were still among the holdings of the Calcutta mint.
