William Wood was granted a patent for coining copper coins for Ireland and the American colonies in 1722. The Irish parliament was discontent however at the circumstances under which the patent was granted and instructed government officials not to accept them. Further to this, Dean Swift urged a general boycott of the coins in his 'Drapier's Letters' claiming that Wood was attempting to defraud the public. Wood was forced to stop production in 1724 and surrendered his patent. The coins were recalled from Ireland and shipped to America where they were intended to circulate alongside Wood's Rosa Americana coins.
