Vladimir Sviatoslavich 'the Great' was prince of Novgorod from 969 to around 977, grand prince of Kiev and ruler of Kievan Rus from 980 to 1015, which included most of western Russia from the Black to the White Seas. This issue is highly significant, not least because it is one of the few surviving coins of this period which has survived intact, but also because it is one of the first appearances of the Rurik dynastic trident on a coin, which later became the national symbol of Ukraine.
