S-5460; Fr-46; Burns-1 (fig. 956). Eighth coinage. Obverse: Crowned coat-of-arms; Reverse: Sword and scepter crossed in saltire; thistle to left and right; crown above. The noted graffiti emanates from some writing etched into the left field on the reverse, just above the handle of the sword. Otherwise, a brilliant and attractively struck example of the type from the waning years of James's reign over both Scotland and England.
